A Purpose-Driven Path in Resident Wellness

My journey began as a student nurse focusing on community health in Philadelphia. I was drawn to the holistic nature of public health and wellness. After exploring various nursing roles, I landed my dream job as a wellness nurse at an LCS community near Chicago. For over 11 years, I ran the Health & Wellness Navigation Program, which helped me connect deeply with the residents and assist them in achieving their health and wellness goals.

The experience gained through this program opened the doors to becoming a CARF accreditation surveyor and an LCS corporate resource team member.

That led me to what I now call my second dream job as the Senior Director of Resident Services. In this capacity, I oversee three key service areas: The Health & Wellness Navigation program, Community Life Services and Innovative Home Services, our private duty program. The three departments together are what I call ‘The Resident Experience’ because they are integral to creating vibrant and personalized lifestyle experiences that help our residents thrive.

Redefining Resident Services

One vital concern among resident service providers is preparing for the silver tsunami. As the aging population grows, we must deliver the same level of excellence in resident services. We are also expected to anticipate the challenges affecting employees’ workflow. An equally significant concern lies in understanding the increasingly diverse demographics within our communities.

We witness multiple generations living under the same roof with divergent life experiences and needs. Shifting from a standardized approach to something more dynamic and personalized can make each individual’s experience exciting and meaningful. This leads to better quality of life, longer independence and stronger community bonds.

If we can create an environment that rejuvenates the thrill of living, we are not only meeting the expectations of our residents but redefining what it means to age well in today’s world.

The integration of AI in resident services is reshaping the way we work. I’m passionate about exploring the best ways to use AI support for safe and intention enhanced daily life in our LCS community.

AI as a Catalyst for Creativity and Care

The integration of AI in resident services is reshaping the way we work. I’m passionate about exploring the best ways to use AI support for safe and intention-enhanced daily life in our LCS community.

I expect a lot of innovation and bold ideas from my team, but some may feel they lack a creative mindset, which I respectfully disagree with. I believe they just need the right tool to bring it out. That’s where AI comes in. It kindles creativity in team members’ minds to design better programs.

What’s more exciting is watching how our teams adopt AI with intention and care. When used correctly, it enhances human touch in resident care.

Charting a Wellness Path with Journey Map

A recent initiative that has made a meaningful difference across LCS is the Wellness Journey Map, a program implemented across all 140 communities. The primary goal is for residents to meet individually or in groups to identify their priorities in terms of health and well-being.

This is achieved through a reflection process that aligns their personal goals with the full spectrum of wellness dimensions we support. The core structure of this program remains the same, but residents are given the freedom to take it in different ways, showcasing the adaptability of this initiative.

One of our communities created a camping-themed version of our Wellness Journey Map, which brought high-level energy and engagement. Another community turned it into a thoughtful discussion group, where residents could discuss their goals and obstacles in a supportive and connected setting. This freedom to personalize the program has driven participation and shared connection throughout our LCS communities.

Blending Innovation with Human Connection

The future of resident care services is deeply intertwined with technology, especially in independent living. Our residents are tech-savvy and actively want technology to be a part of their lifestyle.

One exciting partnership we’ve developed is working with The Happiness Program, a touch-point digital experience that allows residents in all levels of care to be uniquely engaged and connected. I truly value finding vendors who share our innovative mindset and are willing to partner with us to deliver measurable outcomes and an extraordinary experience for our residents.

I believe technology in our communities will evolve on two fronts: one that allows residents to use technology to enhance their daily lives and another that enhances the role of our staff.

Word of Advice for Fellow Professionals

Always look for something new and remember that if something excites you, it’ll surely excite your residents too. Enthusiasm is contagious! Don’t hesitate to explore how an idea can be adapted to your community. Innovation doesn’t always mean big, flashy changes; small, thoughtful shifts can also spark engagement and make a meaningful impact.

Not every idea will work out how you expect it to, and that’s okay. What isn’t okay is not trying. Growth comes with experimentation; be open to embracing creativity and change in every approach.
